Ironie des Schicksals (2016)

With the monumental multimedia installation Ironie des Schicksals, Bernd Reiter addresses the renewed escalation of global power conflicts between East and West. A decommissioned Russian MiG-21 collides with two black American luxury limousines—pierced by countless monitors displaying real news footage from current crisis and war zones. Past and present intertwine to form a powerful memorial of unsettling relevance.

Reiter understands art as an immediate social responsibility. The television images used are not staged, but originate from real media sources—endless loops of violence, flight, and destruction. Like shrapnel, the monitors cut into the aircraft and the car bodies or lie scattered across the floor like a field of debris. At the center stands not historical memory, but the present: the consequences of proxy wars, power politics, and global displacement.

The title Ironie des Schicksals (“Irony of Fate”) ultimately turns toward the viewer—particularly toward Europe itself. Reiter’s installation is not a moralizing gesture, but an open question: an artistic intervention that provokes, unsettles, and calls for personal responsibility.
